Chapter Twenty-Four

We all gathered back in the front room near the bobcat mural. “This is ridiculous. We finally have an actionable item in this house but we can't find the one thing we need.” I dropped down onto the sectional and leaned back, staring at the ceiling.

“We're forgetting the biggest resource we have. How did we learn about this in the first place?” We all looked at my grandmother. “You, Alara,” she continued. “Your gifts are more expansive than anything I've ever heard of. You can find the red book.”

My aunt put her hands on her hips. “I don't want her trying to pull another memory from the energy field. She's been through too much today already. We don't know how much she can handle at once. And her fingernails might actually snap off this time.”

“I had something else in mind. I know you already psychically searched the house—we all did—but at the time we didn't have anything specific we were looking for. I think you should picture the red book, really focus on it, and let your feelers guide you.”

Todd held a hand out to me. “It couldn't hurt. Well, unless your nose starts bleeding again,” he said with a smirk.

I put my hand in his and let him pull me up. “Okay, let's do this.”

Once I was standing, my family just stood there staring at me, and I realized they intended to continue staring at me while I tried to find the book. “I'm not excited about the three of you watching me do this. Could I have a little privacy please?”

Irene grabbed Todd and Elinor by their elbows and led them into the kitchen, and a moment later, I heard the chairs at the island scrape along the floor.

As soon as I closed my eyes, I realized how tired I was. I just wanted to curl up on the couch and take a nap. Needing support, I walked over to the mural and leaned against it. I closed my eyes again.

After a moment to center myself, I pictured the red book in my mind, and asked the energy field for help—this time nicely and politely—and then let my psychic feelers flow from my hands. Nothing happened at first, so I just kept picturing the red book. After a minute, I felt energy flowing from my hands and could see my feelers in my mind's eye.

I decided to follow them while keeping my eyes shut so I could keep focusing on the red book. I let the feelers guide me, taking small steps so I wouldn't trip over anything. I ended up in the back room Elinor had been using to meditate. When I opened my eyes, I found the little desk in the room glowing with blue light.

And someone staring right at me. I jumped two feet off the ground.

“Gah!” I grabbed my chest. “Brighton! You scared the hippos out of me.”

The cat, who sat regally on top of the desk, flicked his tail. “I’m just sitting here.
